Okay, so yesterday’s rumor has been thoroughly scoffed at, so it’s time for a new rumor. Today’s buzz suggests that Palm has a whole new product family under development to complement today’s Zire, Tungsten, and Treo families. The only details floating around are:
- 4 GB of internal storage
- WiFi
- Bigger then Tungsten T5
- New sub-brand (not “Tungsten”)
Since 4 gigs of flash costs about the same as a whole Palm, this rumor suggests that Palm is using a 4 GB 1” hard drive, like the model in the iPod mini. This wouldn’t be the first PDA with a hard drive–Sharp’s had one for months–but it would be the first one on sale outside of Japan.
So, if it’s not a Tungsten, then what is it, and what market are they aiming towards? Gaming? Media player? Portable web browser? Laptop replacement? Knowing Palm, they’ll probably screw it up beyond belief, but one can always hope.

Pretty much everyone is reporting that Sharp has announced a new Japan-only Zaurus, the SL-C3000. The big news is that Sharp has stuffed a 1” 4GB hard drive into this model, making it the first PDA on the market with a built-in hard drive.
I’ve been predicting that this would happen for a while; I’m kind of surprised that it’s taken this long.
That reminds me, I need to produce a set of PDA predictions for 2005 and score how my 2004 predictions went.

It’s turning into a Bad Tech Day. I lost one cheap Ethernet switch today, had weird failures with another, had my wife’s Mac crash, and now my laptop drive is failing. I just love the clicking sound it’s making. It looks like I’m running to Fry’s and playing with Carbon Copy Cloner tonight.
Update (5/5/2004 10am): It’s dead, Jim. The laptop drive died hard in the middle of running Carbon Copy Cloner. I think I got all of the important stuff ($HOME, /Applications, /Library) off of it before it croaked, but this is still really annoying. I’m probably going to have to track down my Panther install CDs to recover from this. At this point, the Powerbook won’t even boot–I just get the modern version of the sad mac face.
Update (5/5/2004 12:40pm): It’s back. I let it sit for an hour, and then it miraculously started booting again. I was able to keep it running long enough to finish copying 33 GB onto the new drive. I’m now back up and running using the new 60 GB external drive, which I’ll swap with the internal drive once I finish today’s big release at work.
