I was just shopping for more blank DVD-R media, and I noticed something surprising: blank 4X DVD-R media and blank CD-R media are roughly the same price. Comparing at AllMediaOutlet, they have 4X DVD-R media for $30 per hundred, while the cheapest non-bulk CD-R media that I could find is $22 per hundred.
